Neck Pain With Headaches

There are many different types of headaches, according to the International Headache Society. Headaches originating from neck problems are known as cervico-genic headaches (CGH). Normally they are a dull ache but can become much stronger. They are normally on one side of the head, although they can be on both sides, and can start at the base of the skull. If severe enough they can extend to the scalp, temples of the skull or eyes.

They are normally caused by back or neck problems, poor posture, poor work-station, stress or trauma. As a result the joint, muscle and nerve structures at the base of the skull are under a lot of tension and so start to become painful. When severe enough it can lead to an accompanying headache.

Physiotherapy can be very useful in these cases and usually eliminates the headache. Techniques such as mobilisations, neural treatment and neck muscle rehabilitation are very effective in reducing pain and headaches. A review of your work-station may also be required.
