Pilates is a long established body control technique initially devised for professional dancers and athletes. It is now widely used as a general leisure and exercise discipline. More recently it has been introduced very successfully by physiotherapy clinics to address the increasingly common imbalances in peoples physiology brought on through the stresses of modern day to day living. Pilates is a subtle yet very effective combination of key muscle stabilising exercises, which improve core stability when combined with the correct controlled breathing techniques. It is Pilates’ simple and accessible approach to body control which makes it so valuable to Physiotherapists when developing rehabilitation programmes for their customers.
The value of Pilates comes from working and rebuilding core strength. This approach addresses physiology related problems at their route. The exercises are graded and thus accessible for all levels. You will learn how to build-up your core strength and tackle weaknesses in the body, achieving a comprehensive mind and body workout through flowing movements and controlled breathing. In a very short time you will develop an awareness of how the body’s musculature works to protect your mobility in everyday life. You will feel stronger and more flexible, reaping the benefits of an improved posture. You will feel more balanced and co-ordinated. With this refreshed physical and mental outlook you find yourself looking forward to sustained physiological improvement whether you have had an injury or using Pilates as an extremely effective means of enhanced body fitness.
In recent years a significant part of my work as a Pilates instructor has involved me working alongside Physiotherapists to deliver specific rehabilitation programmes. Delivering Pilates instruction at this level demands a different working practise with a greater degree of personalised insight for the individual. This is achieved through the exchange of relevant diagnostic information between me and the Physiotherapist, allowing me to tailor a programme of exercises to a person’s circumstances. For this it is necessary for the groups to be restricted in size, usually 6 or less. Further to the Physiotherapist analysis, I spend time with each member of the group to establish a deeper understanding of their personal challenges and circumstances. These working practices are the foundation of a Physiotherapy Directed Pilates Programme.
My name is Julie Bateman. I am a trained Pilates and dance instructor. My commitment to practise and teach Pilates stems from first-hand experience of Pilates during my training as a dancer and throughout my professional dance career. My approach to teaching Pilates is based on my subsequent training as an instructor at the Michael King Institute in London. I have been teaching Pilates to all comers for over 10 years now and have seen how Pilates has helped transform people’s lives, often freeing them from unrelenting pain. It is very rewarding for me to hear from students their positive comments. Below are a few testimonials from recent attendees at our Physiotherapy Directed Pilates Programme.
