Frozen shoulder is a common problem that causes pain and stiffness within the shoulder joint. The cause is not entirely understood but we do know that the shoulder capsule tightens up and becomes contracted over time. This stops the shoulder from moving normally within the joint and so therefore causes its characteristic symptoms.
This tightening may be caused by an accident or trauma, or for no apparent reason at all. However there appears to be a link with glucose/sugar receptors in the shoulder as it can be more common amongst those suffering from diabetes. Those more likely to be affected are those between the ages of 40-60 years.
It can resolve over time but may take up to 2 years to do so. In this time there may be some patients who may respond to physiotherapy treatment. This may include stretching, mobilisation, electrotherapy, acupuncture and manipulative therapy to the spine. Although if not successful then a shoulder injection will usually help reduce the pain. In some cases this may not be enough and so a surgeon may recommend surgery if severe enough.
